Dubstep

Dubstep is a genre of electronic music that has its roots in London's early 2000s UK garage scene. Musically, dubstep is distinguished by its 2step rhythm, or use of snare sounds similar to 2step garage and grime, and an emphasis on bass, often producing "dark" sounds, but just as frequently producing sounds reminiscent of dub reggae or funky US garage. Dubstep tracks are generally produced at a tempo of around 140 beats per minute and in recent years have developed signature half time rhythms, often heavily shuffled or syncopated, and usually, though not exclusively, including only one snare drum hit per bar, often on the third beat. Such factors make dubstep rhythms markedly different from four-to-the-floor rhythms used in other styles of electronic dance music such as house music, which usually have two snare hits accompanying the second and fourth kick drum. Often, the sense of rhythm in dubstep is propelled more by the bassline than by the percussive content.

Micachu and the Shapes
Micachu is, the 21 year old songwriter / producer, Mica Levi. She studies composition at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London . As well as writing more traditional pieces, she writes electronic pop songs, sometimes delivered acoustically. She has worked with a band of equally talented musicians (“The Cluster”) made up of Miss Bienek, Taza, Yvette, Baker Trouble, Mayhem, Kit Downes, Ghostpoet and Kwes, but has recently unveiled her amazing new band (“the Shapes”), made up of Raisa Khan and Marc pell.
Having played at Sonar 2007, in Barcelona, she is currently working on her new album with Matthew Herbert
Her mixtape is available to download now and she released a single (Lone Ranger) on Brikabrak records in March 2008.
Micachu and The Shapes have since signed to Rough Trade records, and their debut album will be out on March 9th 2009.

A New Start
I have been really shit at keeping this updated because I have had loads of stuff on so I'm going to try and start again
First things first; a new weekly segment. Every Sunday I will post the 10 best songs at the moment. Not necessarily new, just excellent tunes. Not posting direct links because I already got in trouble from the record companies for that (not joking) but this little link should be handy
1. La Roux - In for the Kill (Skream's Let's Get Ravey Mix) Banging remix
2. Womack and Womack - Teardrops Classic tune that Mylo dropped in Bristol last week
3. Roots Manuva - Again and Again (Matt Helders {from the Arctic Monkeys} Remix) Great song remixed by an excellent drummer/dj
4. Metronomy - Radio Ladio (Radioclit Remix) Taken from Metronomy's last album and remixed by the Bonde De Role's producers
5. The Virgins - Rich Girls Great band even if they are milked to death by both 'Gossip Girl' and 'The City'
6. Skream - Midnight Request Line The best dubstep
7. Chicks on Speed - Wordy Rappinghood Not exactly new but still used by 2manydjs and Erol Alkan
8. Dj Mujava - Township Funk Couldn't post this list without spreading this massive song around
9. Fake Blood - Mars (Herve Refix) Great version of the first decent rave song in ages
10. Bloc Party - Mercury (Herve is in Dissaray Remix) Bit crap to give two songs to Skream and Herve but they are both putting out excellent songs at the moment and this version is going to be on Bloc Party's new remix album
And just for good measure here are 20 songs in 10 minutes

The Crookers
Drawing from influences of house, hip hop and beyond, Crookers blend their beats with the kind of fidget house finesse that gives Potty Mouth Music its soiled swagger. Since 2003, DJs Phra and Bot have been drawing upon their collective musical backgrounds to create tracks that twist, startle and surprise with synthetic pop.
Before their collaboration as Crookers, Bot and Phra pursued their music interests on a separate tip. Bot took up the piano and guitar at an early age, later moving onto synths, turntables and sequencers. Phra had already started DJing by age 11, when he was introduced to the Italian hip hop scene. Soon, he morphed into an MC and became fully immersed in a culture that would shape his future production career.
“Both of us started getting more involved in music when we used to listen to hip hop,” Phra says. When the two artists met, both were trying to branch out of their genre success and explore dance music. The experiment worked. “It felt natural to team up, seeing that we had the same musical tastes … which isn’t that easy here in Milan,” he says.
After having released two EPs earlier this year (“Knobbers” and “Mad Kidz”, both exclusively containing original tracks), they are currently working on their first album, which is due for late 2008 or early 2009.
